Friends & Traditions

Julia's 5th grade teacher holds a very special place in her heart. There are no other elementary school teachers that she continues to talk about to this day other than Mrs. Healey.  That year she had a group of friends in school who were inseparable...

Kailey, Julia, Livvy, Kelly and Gianna

For the past 3 years on Mrs. Healey's birthday, this same group of girls meet quickly after school to decorate cupcakes and deliver them to her classroom at their old elementary school. And every year, Mrs. Healey is overwhelmed with surprise and gratitude. These girls have gone to the same middle school for the past three years and some of them have moved on to new groups of friends...but it is very apparent that they still share a wonderful friendship with each other. I absolutely love that. I picked these five girls up from school yesterday and they talked and laughed all the way back to our house telling funny school stories...and I could hear their laughter all the way up to my bedroom upstairs (as I tried not to hover) while making their cupcakes.

And here is that same group of girls today (now all in the 8th grade) with their beloved 5th grade teacher after delivering their goodies...

After their visit, the girls went out to the nature path behind their old elementary school and took a bunch of fun pictures...

Sadly, this may be their last year doing this get together as they'll be going their separate ways in the fall.  A few of them will be going off to a private high school and the others will be off to the public high school. But I know they'll always have a very special bond with each other. That I know for sure.

A day in the life of Me

Eight years ago, I did a post about the day in the life of me. Back then my kiddies were 7, 6 and 3. Fast forward to today and they are 15, 14 and 11. Although those preschool and elementary school days were so very sweet and fun...now are the days of middle school and high school. Still fun and life is just as hectic as it was back then...just in a different sort of way.

A typical day for me this past week...

6:15 a.m. - My cell phone alarm goes off and I am comatose and in utter disbelief that it is morning already...and I'm wondering if I actually slept.

6:25 a.m. - Almost take a header down the stairs in my big slippers because it's pitch dark and I'm still half asleep.

6:26 a.m. - Kiss my girls good morning. Gianna is her usual grumpy self demanding a blanket and the clicker for the TV.  She puts on the "kids baking championship" for the 100th time. Julia sits at the kitchen table and slurps on her bowl of milk with a few pieces of cereal floating around in it.

6:35 a.m. - Say goodbye to my boy who is now TALLER than me. He looks so very handsome as he's carrying his backpack with all the text books, notebooks and binders that he never opens or uses. I peak out the window to watch him walk down the street to his bus stop in the pitch black.

6:40 a.m. - Grumpy Gus (Gianna) says she wants her breakfast as I shuffle off to the cabinets to get her cereal bowl, spoon, cheerios, milk and sugar.

6:41 a.m. - Remind Gianna to lay off the sugar...

6:42 a.m. - Remind Gianna again to lay off the sugar as she dumps her 3rd heaping spoonful on her healthy low sugar cereal.

7:00 a.m. - Julia calls for me to help straighten her hair. Very glad that today she isn't asking me to braid her hair as that makes me literally sweat as I know I won't meet her hair expectations.

7:10 a.m. - Grumpy Gus has now thankfully turned back into my funny talkative Gianna Mae. She is now dressed in her standard uniform of black leggings, grey t-shirt and sweatshirt. I take brush number one to brush her hair back into her standard ponytail...brush number two to help flatten down the curly hair...and brush number three to brush out her ponytail. Spray spray spray as the little one HATES frizzy hair.

7:15 a.m. - Shuffle both girls out the door. Kiss Julia goodbye who has now turned into Grumpy Gus...and then Gianna who complains that Julia has yet again taken off to the bus stop without her. I run to the window watching my girls walking separately down the street..and pray no crazy lunatic grabs them. I know...but that's how I think...every day.

7:16 a.m. - Break out my beloved box of Frosted Mini Wheats cereal and watch a little TV.

7:30 a.m. - My cell phone rings and it's Julia. The bus never came. I throw on some sweatpants and zip up my jacket so you can't see my PJ top and drive down the street to pick up the seven girls at the bus stop and drive them to school.

7:40 a.m. - Pull up to the middle school in the rain and watch as seven girls pile out of my car resembling those clown cars with endless clowns getting out of it.

7:50 a.m. - Quickly take a shower and get ready for the day as Nicholas is going to start texting me to ask where I am.

9:00 a.m. - Pick Nicholas up from school as he had one mid term exam and was able to go home after that.

9:10 a.m. - Start nagging Nicholas to start studying for his other mid terms coming up this week.

9:11 a.m. - Nicholas plugs in his headphones and my voice is now drowned out.

9:12 a.m. - Start waving my arms frantically in front of him and resemble someone playing charades.

9:13 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. -  Laundry, vacuum, dust, tell Nicholas to study, wash wood floors, more laundry, clean the bathroom, wipe down counters and table, tell Nicholas to study, do more laundry, work, have lunch with Nicholas, do more laundry and do more work.

2:45 p.m. - Pick Gianna up from school and take her to the orthodontist.

3:00 p.m. - I can see from Gianna's face and mouth...that is now filled with elastics...that she is NOT happy.

3:01 p.m. - Give the "after a few days you won't be sore anymore" speech that I've given endless times.

3:15 p.m. - Arrive home. Gianna raids the cabinets for food. As she pulls out the snack drawers that are packed full of snacks, I hear that we have "no food".

3:16 p.m. - I suggest bananas, grapes, apples with peanut butter, clementines, pretzels...

3:17 p.m. - "There's nothing to eat in this house!!!!!"

3:30 p.m. - Check on Nicholas who is super focused on some YouTube videos and remind him that he has more mid terms this week.

4:00 p.m. - Drop Gianna off at dance.

4:15 p.m. - Nicholas leaves for Foxboro for "Stop it Goal-Tending" hockey practice.

5:00 p.m. - Drop Julia off at dance.

5:10 p.m. - Realize I didn't make anything for dinner.

6:00 p.m. - Pick Gianna up from dance.

6:10 p.m. - Make Gianna a waffle.

6:55 p.m. - Pick Julia up from dance.

7:00 p.m. - Drop Julia off at CCD.

8:30 p.m. - Pick Julia up from CCD.

8:40 p.m. - Remind Nicholas that he has mid terms tomorrow.

9:30 p.m. - Tell the girls it's bedtime and to get moving.

9:31 p.m. - Remind Nicholas that he has mid terms tomorrow and maybe he should start studying.

10:00 p.m. - Fall asleep watching old episodes of "19 Kids and Counting" and dream about my kids working on their "jurisdictions" and playing and talking nicely with each other...just like the Duggar siblings.

Disclaimer: Of course Danny helps out with a lot of these things as well as the driving to the activities. I would officially lose my mind if I had to do all this alone.

Happy New Year

Ugh...winter break is over. I think I feel as bad as the kids do about going back to school and work today. We had a great Christmas vacation! There was still dance and hockey but just the right amount to keep the kids occupied and moving. They were very busy with friends and parties and sleepovers too. I loved sleeping in every day and not having to wake up at 6:15 to see the kiddies off to school...and no work. It was so nice!! It's my favorite week of the year for sure. I loved sitting in my living room looking at all my Christmas lights and decorations and snoozing on the couch with my new iPad mini!!

Gianna had an early NYE party on the 30th with her dance friends...

Danny, Gianna and I had a great NYE across the street with Patty, Franny, Bridget and her boyfriend Nolan. We had a delicious meal and played a bunch of fun games until midnight. It was very relaxing with lots of laughs!!

Nicholas spent NYE with some friends playing knee hockey, eating lots of junk food and had a sleepover. And Julia was invited down the Cape to her friend's beach house for the weekend. I was really happy everyone had something fun to do!
