Gianna's 15th birthday

SASSY and CLASSY and so KICK-ASSY!  That's our Gianna Mae!!!

She got curtain lights and LED lights for her room as well as a smartphone printer.  Now I'm sure I'll never see her!  She loves her room!

Not only are we dealing with The Virus but to make the day even stranger, The Boy is in seclusion in his room due to the fact that he works at a grocery store and has been sick with a fever, headaches and a cough. So just to be be on the safe side, he's been tested and is just hanging out in his bedroom by himself.  He's already feeling better today without a fever anymore and a lot more energy so fingers crossed it's just a bug and he'll be fine. The rest of us are feeling perfectly healthy thank goodness.
So we Facetimed Nicholas so he could join us for presents and to sing Happy Birthday.

And this afternoon my friends and I did a Zoom call to just connect and hang out for a while.  It was so much fun!

March is almost over...and then it's on to April.  A full month of NOTHING on the calendar.  No school...no activities...no NOTHING.  Yikes.  Such strange times.  But to look on the bright side...I love having the kids around and I'm loving having dinner together as a family every single night.  Something that rarely used to happen.  So that's been really nice!

Vermont Lumberjacks

It's official!!  The Boy is signing a contract to play junior hockey with the Vermont Lumberjacks up in Burlington, VT!! Yay!!  We are so proud of Nicholas!!!

He's made his dream come true!!

When I found out I literally burst into tears...first because I was so incredibly proud of him...but also because that meant he would officially be leaving home...and me.  But that is something we've been preparing him for his whole life...and it's time.  He will be doing what he LOVES and what MOTIVATES him!  While he's playing hockey, he will also take some college courses so he can move on to a four-year college to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and hopefully play college hockey!  That's the plan!!  And it was HIS PLAN!!  Not ours...and that's the way it should be.  Pursue what you love and live your dreams.  Something I learned from my Mom.  She always encouraged us to chase our dreams and to be courageous in pursuing the lives WE wanted...not the "traditional" life that others thought we should be living.

And that is what life is all about.  Go Nicholas!!!

He'll be playing and traveling to games in VT, NH, CT, NJ, PA and MA.  Their Mission (and it's impressive)...
  1. Prepare and PROMOTE players to NCAA Collegiate Hockey.
  2. Provide an environment of DISCIPLINE in which players can develop athletically as well as emotionally.
  3. Provide quality COACHING and instruction.
  4. Provide a comprehensive NUTRITION program for both on-ice and off-ice environments.
  5. Provide specialized FITNESS and STRENGTH coaching to prepare player to compete at the highest level.
  6. Provide player VISIBILITY by actively communicating player’s talents and character to college coaches and pro scouts.
  7. Expect individual COMMITMENT to compete at the highest level.
  8. Expect total commitment to EDUCATION and COMMUNITY SERVICE.
  9. Expect the same level of commitment to EXCELLENCE from our coaches and staff as we do of our players.
  10. Expect every player to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with being a ROLE MODEL for young people in the community.

Unraveling

What's been postponed (and has a high probability of being cancelled all together):
  • First and foremost SCHOOL  - Nicholas is a senior, Julia is a junior and Gianna is a freshman
  • Two dance competitions so far for Julia and Gianna
  • National Honor Society induction ceremony for Julia
  • Senior year hockey banquet for Nicholas
  • Confirmation for Gianna
  • Nurse shadowing day for Julia
  • College tours with Julia
  • Many doctor, orthodontist and dentist appointments
  • Our trip to Cancun over April school vacation : (
and what about...
  • School for the rest of the year???
  • The dance recital and remaining dance competitions for Julia and Gianna???
  • SAT's for Nicholas and Julia???
  • Junior and Senior proms for Nicholas and Julia???
  • What about all Nicholas' high school senior events like the All Night Grad Party???
  • And will Nicholas even have his high school graduation???

It's crazy how I just took all these things for granted.  I was actually upset that so many of these activities were overlapping...and worried about how crazy busy our lives were going to be.

It's amazing how fast everything was taken away.

I would give anything to be able to hit the rewind button and go back to Christmas Day.  Back when things were "normal" in my life.

Life continues to unravel...

Social Distancing in Pleasantville

Social Distancing...except for the people you are living with.

Well here in Pleasantville, we are trying to do our best.  We only see each other outside.  No hand shaking.  No  hugs.  Just fist bumps and waving.

We still need to see people and socialize.  Because otherwise it can be very isolating and unhealthy mentally. I think the majority of us are doing the best we can.  The struggle is real.

(I know this picture may say otherwise...but we really did do our best to keep our distance from each other.)

Happy Birthday Dad

Yesterday was my Dad's birthday.  I so wish he were still here so I could have given him a big hug in person, sang his two versions of Happy Birthday to him, and shared some cake and ice cream.

I spent some time last night looking through letters and cards he had given me over the years.  I also have an envelope of his that he had filled with pictures, letters, cards and other mementos that were important to him.  I found this adorable picture of him as a young boy...

And while going through pictures for my Mom's services we found this picture of her as a young girl...

How lucky was I to have had my Dad for 44 years of my life?  He was the best Dad ever. And how lucky was I to have had my Mom for 54 years of my life?  She was the best Mom ever.  It feels so strange to not have parents anymore.  But how lucky and blessed was I to have had them for parents? They were both fabulous role models.

This was the daily affirmation from Louise Hay's book "Trust Life" from yesterday, Dad's birthday.  It's a great reminder for the days we are all living in right now..."Don't let your days slip by in frustration or you will miss out on much of your joy"...

And this is today's affirmation which reminds me so much of my Mom.  Because she saw beauty wherever she looked...

I miss my Mom and Dad.  Every...single...day.

And listen to this...Nicholas & Julia from 2008 wishing their Papa a Happy 75th Birthday!  My heart...

Coronavirus

March was to be a crazy busy month for our family with National Honor Society induction for Julia (postponed), Nicholas' senior hockey banquet (postponed), two dance competitions for Julia and Gianna (cancelled) and Confirmation for Gianna (postponed).  In April we have a family vacation planned to Cancun and May is Nicholas and Julia's junior and senior high school proms as well as another dance competition for the girls.
My world has been feeling tremendously off kilter since the end of December...and I was starting to think that maybe...just maybe...things were looking better for March.  But now?  The world is dealing with the Coronavirus. I've been in denial thinking everyone was panicking and overreacting.  But now I'm beginning to realize that's not actually the case.  Not only are all our family events being cancelled, but my job is now being affected as we do domestic and international classroom training and everything is postponed or cancelled indefinitely through May.  So there goes my paycheck.

Anyway...I came across this article today and I feel it's the best one I've read so far about the virus.  Absolutely there is tremendous disappointment, frustration and fear...but after reading the article it does help put it into some sort of perspective at least.
------------
This Can Be Our Finest Hour - But We Need All Of You
by Grown and Flown

For the vast majority of people nationwide and worldwide, this virus is not about you. This is one of those times in life, in history, when your actions are about something bigger. They are about someone else. They are about something greater, a greater good that you may not ever witness. A person you will save who you will never meet.
You may be healthy, and your kids may be healthy. Your parents may be healthy. Everyone around you seems fine. And all the things you planned and the 2020 spring you thought you were going to have has been completely undone. You have to work from home. Your conference is cancelled. Your semester is over. Your work is cancelled. It all seems fast, and out-of-proportion and disorienting. You look at each action and think—but it would be okay if I did that. It’s not so big. We worked so hard. They would be so disappointed.
Your losses are real. Your disappointments are real. Your hardships are real. I don’t mean to make light or to minimize the difficulty ahead for you, your family or community.
But this isn’t like other illnesses and we don’t get to act like it is. It’s more contagious, it’s more fatal—and most importantly, even if it can be managed. It can’t be managed at a massive scale—anywhere. We need this thing to move slowly enough for our collective national and worldwide medical systems to hold the very ill so that all of the very ill can get taken care of.
Because at this time of severe virus there are also all of the other things that require care. There is still cancer, there are still heart attacks, there are still car accidents, there are still complicated births. And we need our medical systems to be able to hold us. And we need to be responsible because our medical systems are made up of people and these amazing healthcare workers are a precious and limited resource. They will rise to this occasion. They will work to help you heal. They will work to save your mother or father or sister or baby. But in order for that to happen we have very important work to do. ALL OF US.
So what is our work? Yes, you need to wash your hands and stay home if you are sick. But the biggest work you can do is expand your heart and your mind to see yourself and see your family as part of a much bigger community that can have a massive—hugely massive—impact on the lives of other people.
I remember the feeling of helplessness after 9/11 and after Hurricane Sandy. I remember how much people wanted to help. I remember how much generosity of spirit there was about wanting to give, wanting to be helpful, wanting to save lives. And many of you have had experiences since then—whether it was a mass shooting, or the wildfires, or floods. There have been times you have looked on and wondered how you could help. And now we ALL have that chance.

Junior Hockey

Nicholas is working on making his dreams come true!  When we started the college discussions with him, much to our surprise he told us he wanted to play junior hockey for two years first before starting college.  His dream is to eventually play college hockey while working on a criminal justice degree.  It was all new to us but we really wanted to make that happen for him...but we also wanted him to be realistic and have a plan.

So together we came up with two plans....Plan A (his junior hockey dream) and Plan B (straight to college).  Nicholas got right to work and started emailing a bunch of coaches of the junior hockey teams he was interested in all over New England.  He also applied to a great community college nearby as a solid acceptance as well as a few 4-year state schools.  If he is lucky enough to play hockey the next two years, he will start taking a few on-line core classes with that local community college.

And much to our surprise...quite a few of those coaches returned his messages and expressed interest!  He already has one local team very interested in him and he's going to practice with another local team today!

And most exciting...the past few days he's been in Vermont practicing with a junior hockey team.  It seemed to go very well and they were quite impressed with him.  The best part about their program is they commit a lot of their players to colleges all over the country.

Whatever comes of this...I have to say I am so beyond proud of him by taking charge of his future and making it happen.  Oh...and he also made honor roll this term!  Who knew The Boy had so much motivation???  : )   When it comes to hockey...he has a TON!!!

College Tours #5 and #6

Julia and I went to see two colleges today. First we saw Regis College...

and we both HATED it!!  Then we visited Endicott College in the afternoon and LOVED it!!

Such a beautiful campus right on the ocean.  We loved everything about it!  They have a wonderful nursing program and a fantastic competitive dance team!  Ironically our tour guide was a nursing major and a dance minor!  How awesome was that!

I'm so happy she now has three schools that she loves!  And we have at least three more on the list that we want to tour!

Finally

Finally...some good news for a change!

Julia is being inducted into the National Honor Society!!

And Nicholas was accepted to Salem State!!

We're so proud of our kids!!!

Mikey

And then there were three...

My Mom has been telling me for years that she wanted me to take her cat if anything happened to her.  So that's what we did...

These automatic feeders are the best by the way.  No stealing each other's food!!

I'd say he's made himself right at home!  He'll live out his years with his two new brothers, two square meals a day, plenty of treats, tons of cat toys and lots and lots of love...
